The Denmark Men’s Shed (DMS) has achieved major steps forward in 2019 in its quest to build a shed. Allocation of land for the site at the Railway Historical Precinct, opposite the Rivermouth Caravan Park, was granted by the Denmark Shire at its December 17 meeting. DMS has raised over $350,000 from its fundraising activities and grants from the Don Brandenburg Foundation and the Jack Family Charitable Trust. An application for a grant for a similar amount will be considered by Lottery West early in the New Year. Given success in that application funds will hopefully be available to begin construction early in 2020.
This is the outcome that members have been working hard to achieve since DMS was founded in 2015.
The Shed has been designed to enable men and the community to meet in a safe place which provides an environment of care, fellowship, and dignity. It will have three areas. One for woodworking machinery, one for benchwork, assembly and repair of timber items and most importantly, a meeting area with a relaxed environment for meetings and fellowship.
Agreements are in place for the sharing of the facility with the Denmark Machinery Restoration Group, the Denmark Woodturners and the Spirit of Play School. It is expected that other community groups will also benefit once the Shed is complete. The sharing of this facility will mean that its community partners will have less reason to seek funding for duplicate facilities.
“Overall 2019 has seen large steps forward and we now look to the plans coming to fruition for the benefit of our members and also the Denmark community” said DMS president John O’Donnell.
DMS has had enormous support from the Denmark community. It has received many generous donations of machinery, tools and furniture which will be installed in the new Shed.
However, DMS is now urgently seeking secure, dry storage of 30 – 40sqm so that donations can be stored until the Shed’s completion later in 2020. The alternative is to hire commercial storage space which will deplete funds required for building and fitting out the new Shed.
If you have or know of somebody that might be prepared to offer some storage space please contact DMS president John on 0416 092 919.
